I lived in Amsterdam for a while, and these are the spots and experiences I always recommend to friends visiting. From iconic museums and canal bike rides to late-night views and pancakes the size of your plate, this list covers the classics and a few personal favorites that capture what makes the city so special.
1. Rijksmuseum

This iconic museum houses over 1 million objects spanning 800 years of Dutch history and art. Highlights include Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Vermeer’s The Milkmaid, and Van Gogh’s self-portraits. The building alone is worth the visit, with Gothic and Renaissance details throughout. Tickets are €25 for adults, free for under 18s. Book online in advance.
2. Anne Frank Museum

A sobering but powerful experience. Walk through the secret annex where Anne Frank and her family hid during WWII. The space is small and emotional, with exhibits detailing the Holocaust and Amsterdam’s wartime history. Tickets are €16 and must be booked ahead. Give yourself 1-2 hours here.

5. Heineken Experience

A fun, interactive tour through the old Heineken brewery. Learn about the brewing process, check out historic ads, and enjoy a beer at the end. Tours are €24,95. Set aside 1-2 hours.
6. Albert Cuyp Market & De Pijp
One of the largest and most vibrant street markets in the city. You’ll find everything from fresh stroopwafels to Surinamese roti. Come hungry and spend time wandering the De Pijp neighborhood too. Open Monday to Saturday, 9am–5pm.
7. Van Gogh Museum

14. Thrifting on the 9 Streets

Wander these cute streets for vintage finds, independent boutiques, and cozy cafés. Even if you don’t buy anything, the charm is worth the stroll.

One of the most famous coffeeshops in Amsterdam. Even if you’re not lighting up, it’s worth visiting to get a feel for the city’s laid-back cannabis culture.

Fast food from a vending machine. Pop in some coins and grab hot kroketten or burgers behind glass doors. Perfect for late-night munchies.
19. Dutch Pancakes
A cozy vegan café serving loaded fries, boozy shakes, and retro vibes. A fun twist on fast food that still feels indulgent.

Chill out at this local square surrounded by bars and restaurants. Great for people watching with a beer in hand. On Saturdays there’s an organic market.
22. FOAM Photography Museum
Small but impactful. Rotating exhibitions showcase bold, often experimental photography. Entry is €12.50. Spend 1-2 hours diving into the visual storytelling.
