Top 10 Things to Do in Aruba (+ Essential Travel Tips)

I didn’t know how much I’d fall for Aruba until I was there. It’s the kind of place that somehow manages to be relaxing and exciting, with natural beauty, friendly locals, and a ton to do. Whether you’re planning your first trip or just need ideas for what to do once you land, I’ve got you covered.

Before we dive into my top 10 favorite activities, let’s go over a few quick travel tips to help you make the most of your time there.

Aruba is a year-round destination, but timing your visit can make a big difference. Peak season runs from mid-December to mid-April, drawing in travelers escaping winter. If you’re looking to save money and avoid crowds, consider going during the off-season (April to October).Aruba is outside the hurricane belt, so weather stress isn’t really a thing.

Aruba is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. US, Canadian, and EU citizens don’t need a visa, just a valid passport and an online ED card you’ll fill out before flying in. Make sure to complete the Aruba ED-Card online. It’s free and required for all travelers including kids. Most airlines won’t let you check in without it, so don’t skip this step.

Also quick tip for when you depart: If you’re flying back to the U.S., arrive at least 3 hours before your flight. You’ll go through both Aruba and U.S. customs, which can take a while even when it’s not busy.

The local currency is the Aruban florin, but USD is accepted pretty much everywhere. Some places, like taxis, prefer cash though, so it’s smart to carry a little with you. Aruba isn’t the cheapest island, but if you do a little digging, there are plenty of happy hours and budget-friendly food spots that are totally worth it. Check out my favorite food spots in Aruba for my personal recommendations.

Do you need to tip in Aruba? The short answer here is yes, 10-15% tip is pretty common here. Still make sure to check if there’s an automatic service charge.

Most people speak English, Spanish, Dutch, and Papiamento (Aruba’s local creole). You’ll have no issue communicating. But please learn a few phrases in Papiamento. Some of the best moments come from conversations with people who live there. Tossing in a “Bon dia” (good morning) or “Bon bini” (welcome) is always appreciated. Ask for food tips, try family-run spots, and check out local markets or events if you can.

As for getting around, renting a car gives you the most flexibility, but it’s not essential. Taxis are easy to find, and many drivers will give you their WhatsApp number to coordinate pickups. Prices are regulated and posted, although they’re slightly higher on Sundays.

Aruba is one of the safest Caribbean islands. Just use common sense (don’t leave bags unattended, watch your drinks, etc.). Locals are super friendly and helpful.

If something’s on your Aruba bucket list, book it in advance through sites like Viator. That said, plenty of tours can be booked once you arrive, especially in the off-season.

Okay! Now onto the top 10 things to do in Aruba!

Atilla Shipwreck in Aruba

Set sail on a luxurious catamaran from Noord to explore the Antilla Shipwreck, a sunken cargo ship from 1940 now covered with coral and tube sponges, teeming with sea life including fish, lobsters, and turtles. Enjoy a nice lunch and an open bar on the catamaran, making this a memorable day on the water.
